Central Louisiana Chamber of Commerce, Alexandria, Louisiana, September 28, 2011 -- New changes go into effect for the LA One Call Law effective October 1st. Here is a brief summary:
- Any and all “EXCAVATORS” must make the call request. That includes subcontractors working for a prime, if that sub is excavating. Excavating is defined as the movement of any amount of dirt, including plié driving, drilling, boring, etc.
- Currently you must call 48 hours prior to planned excavation. The new law requires you to call 2 full business days prior to the planned excavation. As an example: if you planned an excavation for Monday, under current law you would have called the previous Thursday. New law changes that to previous Wednesday.
- Under current law the marks are good for 10 calendar days. Under the new law the marks are good for 20 calendar days.
Again, effective October 1, you will have to call further out of the planned excavation, but less often.
Remember, State Police Haz-Com troopers are writing citations for damages to hazardous underground facilities, if: there are no locate calls, if excavation occurs prior to the 2 business days, and/or if the damage goes un-reported.
